Chapter 09 Question Families Ask

“We sent the email. Why haven’t we heard anything?”

The Short Answer: Silence is frustrating, but it is not always a final answer. Coaches are balancing in-season travel, current roster management, compliance rules, and hundreds of inbox messages—or your athlete may not yet match their current positional need.

From Our Journey: Navigating the Frustration of Unanswered Emails

Unanswered emails were one of the hardest parts of the recruiting process for our family. We wondered whether we had written the email wrong, whether the coach was still at the school, whether her marks were not good enough, or whether that program simply wasn’t recruiting her event that year. Those questions are completely normal—but we learned that guessing at the reason does not move recruiting forward.

7 Real Reasons What Coach Silence Can Mean

  1. The coach hasn’t seen the message yet: During peak competition or travel weeks, an inbox can fill with 200+ emails a day.
  2. Recruiting calendar / age rules prevent a direct reply: Depending on your sport, division, and grade level, NCAA rules may restrict when a coach can send non-generic replies.
  3. The program is prioritizing a different position or event group first: A track staff may be filling throws first, or a soccer staff may need a goalkeeper before looking at midfielders.
  4. The coach wants to see one more jump in development: You may be on their watch list, waiting for junior-season marks or updated film.
  5. Roster and scholarship numbers are in flux: With the transfer portal and roster caps, staffs sometimes wait before extending new recruiting interest.
  6. Your current marks/film don’t yet fit their tier: Which is why casting a wide net across D1, D2, D3, and NAIA is essential.
  7. The email address or staff member changed: Always verify the current athletics staff directory—not an outdated third-party database.
Reality Check

Sometimes no response eventually does mean no. That can sting, but one coach’s non-response is never a verdict on your athlete’s talent or worth. Recruiting is about finding the programs where interest and fit go both ways.

Playbook Tip

Do not measure your athlete’s value by the speed of a college coach’s reply.

Chapter 09 Frequently Asked Questions

How long should we wait before following up with a coach who hasn't replied?

Wait until you have something new to share (typically 2 to 4 weeks, or right after a new PR, tournament, updated highlight video, or academic term grade update) rather than sending an empty 'just checking in' message.

Could NCAA rules be the reason a coach isn't replying to my 9th or 10th grader?

Yes! In many NCAA Division I and II sports, coaches are prohibited from sending personalized recruiting emails or making phone calls to prospects before June 15 after sophomore year (or September 1 of junior year, depending on the sport).
