Chapter 12 Question Families Ask

“How do we know whether a famous or dream school is actually the right school?”

The Short Answer: Separate the brand from the daily experience. A famous logo creates excitement on social media for 48 hours, but your athlete has to live the daily reality for four years: practices, classes, travel, teammates, coaching, housing, and campus life.

From Our Journey: Why Labels and Weather Couldn't Answer the Real Question

Early in our process, Division I and warm-weather locations carried a lot of weight for our daughter. Over time, we learned that a division label and a sunny forecast could not answer the most important question: Would she actually be happy, supported, and developing here every day?

The 7 Factors Behind the Logo

When evaluating any school—whether it’s a nationally televised powerhouse or a smaller college you just learned about last week—score these seven realities:

  • Opportunity to Compete: Will your athlete actually travel and compete, or sit behind 12 recruits in a stacked depth chart?
  • Development Plan: Does the event/position coach have a track record of developing athletes from your current mark to the next level?
  • Coaching Fit & Stability: How long has the staff been there, and how do they communicate?
  • Team Environment: Are teammates supportive and connected?
  • Academic Fit: Can athletes in this program actually pursue your desired major?
  • Campus & Location: Does the campus community feel welcoming outside the stadium?
  • Life Outside Sport: Would your athlete enjoy this college if they weren’t in uniform?
Reality Check

The 'dream school' can turn out to be the wrong fit—and a school your athlete barely knew at the beginning of recruiting can become the best fit once your family looks closer.

Playbook Tip

Talk first. Decide later. A conversation with a coach is information—not a commitment.

Chapter 12 Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to walk on at a big Division I school or play immediately at a D2/D3 school?

It depends on the athlete's goals and how the program treats walk-ons/developing athletes. Some athletes love the challenge of developing on a large D1 squad; others thrive far more when travelling, scoring, and competing from freshman year at a strong D2, D3, or mid-major program.

How do you check if a college coach actually develops athletes?

Look up the roster's upperclassmen and compare their high school recruiting marks/stats to their sophomore and junior college marks. Consistently improving marks across the roster is the best sign of great coaching.
